KTM are releasing this new bike, the Freeride 350. I was on the pan reading an article on it in Motor Cycle News the other day, it looks to be a great fun bike. Its nothing mental, the power output is around 25 bhp but it will weigh in at just under 100Kg. Its not massive either so should be an awesome tool for getting your off road skillz on. You should be able to get quite far on one too with a tank range of about 85 miles and MCN say the exhaust is super quiet which is handy if you're riding areas you shouldn't. There is even an electric model for folk that believe batteries are better for the environment than petrol. The only downside is the £6000 price tag, pretty expensive for a toy, especially considering how much you can get a Suzuki DRZ400 for. But, just like BMW, Harley Davidson, Ducati and Red Bull, KTM have made themselves into a brand, so I'm sure KTM won't have any trouble selling them, especially when you see their promotional video. Looks like a hoot...will probably be about $11000 here, so far to be expensive to be a toy for me. Pretty skilled riders in the vid, riding up a tree for fuck sake....why the fuck would you want to ride up a tree.....

I love the Freeride concept. Answers a question I was asking last year. Motocross bikes are leagues apart from trail bikes. Dynamically they are just awesome and allow you to do so much. The pain in the arse though is the servicing, really frequent on the two strokes and really expensive and still too frequent on the four strokes.
ReplyDeleteI wanted something like a 450f and was thinking whether you could lower the compression ratio or use a softer cam profile to get some reliability back. The electric bike is really cool as it should, hopefully, knock the engine servicing completely on its head. The soft tune of the 350 should make things cheaper too.
I'm really excited about these bikes. Not that I'll be able to afford one! Imagine how much trouble you could get into on them!
Dude, it really isnt as much as you think for the up keep of either or the 2 or 4 strokes...its about $120 for a 2 and 180 for a 4 not bad considering how much fun they are. And no you cant change the comp. ratio or do a cam for longer riding..those bikes are made to be run hard..simple as that, if you dont want the upkeep dont buy a race bike..cause high quality fun is high priced maintence
DeleteThe whole thing behind the Freeride is that its NOT a race bike. The engine is in a very low state of tune so won't need its oil changed every few hours.. Ferg races motocross and is quite experienced with engines and stuff, hopefully he'll be along soon to give his point himself. What are you saying costs $120 for a two stroke? Four stroke servicing cam become expensive over here in Scotland due to the high price of oil. Even good quality two stroke oil costs a fortune.
